2012 Intentions
A Radical Approach to Setting Intentions for a Transformative Year

The new year is upon us. Join us for a powerful process for aligning your energy with your deepest intentions for 2012. This is a radically fresh approach to New Year's "resolutions" that offers a process and tools to help you manifest your dreams for yourself and your community.

The evening will consist of various writing exercises, meditations, and conversations.

This workshop is offered by mindfulness/meditation teacher and sustainability consultant Deborah Eden Tull and D Miller, director of Project Butterfly, who will help you make a personal plan for 2012 and give you the tools to actualize this on a daily basis. The workshop will begin with an introduction by our hosts Midori Takata and Angja Aditi of Oshunmare.

Project Butterfly has hosted this workshop since 2009 and it provides invaluable resources and a solid foundation for starting off the new year.

Deborah Eden Tull & D Miller
Deborah Eden Tull is a mindfulness and meditation teacher and sustainability consultant. Her approach to sustainable living is a unique combination of peace and environmentalism that emphasizes the interconnection between personal and planetary well-being. She is the author of The Natural Kitchen: Your Guide to the Sustainable Food Revolution (Process Media), and is currently working on her second book, Mindful Living Revolution: How to Live Sustainably Inside and Out.

D Miller is the Director of Project Butterfly.

Midori Takata is co-Founder of Project Butterfly, Project Co-ordinator of the Yawanawa Project and a freelance commercial production coordinator & manager. Whether working on a commercial or organizing an organic gardening workshop, her intention is to always raise awareness, support consciousness elevation, environmental sustainability, indigenous rights, and spiritual healing. With her work she intends to bridge gaps and connect communities both locally and globally.

Angja Aditi is the Co-Creator/Director of Oshunmare - Temple of the Great Work. Angja works to enhance the vital relationship we have as "spiritual beings embodied on earth" by creating integrative experiences of self inquiry and freedom with structure and discipline through devotion and service.

"The Magic of Co-Creation: Building Power in Groups" Workshop with Starhawk
From Cairo to Wall Street, all over the world people are coming together to create change, organizing without top-down leadership or hierarchies. In thousands of groups everywhere, people work together to create everything from community gardens to media to new ways of living. Such circles can be enormously creative and empowering, but they can also be cumbersome and frustrating. Yet when they work well, they liberate our imagination and change the world.

In her latest book, The Empowerment Manual, A Guide for Collaborative Groups, Starhawk draws on four decades of experience in circles and collectives to show us how to foster connection, clear communication and positive power in ourselves and our groups.

In this workshop, we will use the tools of magic, meditation, trance, and ritual to explore issues of personal and social power. We'll look at ways to create nurturing and healing group structures, to deal with difficult people and embrace constructive conflict. We'll raise and focus group energy to celebrate our connectedness and nurture resilient communities that can be joyful and effective agents of change.

Winter Solstice Ritual
After the workshop and a delicious organic meal, we will celebrate the longest night of the year with a Winter Solstice ritual and Spiral Dance led by Starhawk and Reclaiming LA. The Experiment :: Genetically Modified Foods & You

Join Evolver Los Angeles, Project Butterfly, & Organic Authority as we welcome leading experts on genetically modified foods for a candid panel discussion on the issue and how we can help California become the first state to make the labeling of all food containing GMOs mandatory.

According to the California Department of Health and Agriculture, nearly 80 percent of all processed foods sold in the U.S. contain genetically modified ingredients. Ninety-three percent of all soy and cotton, 90 percent of canola and 86 percent of corn grown in the U.S. are genetically modified.

The rise in food allergies, asthma, birth defects and many other serious human health issues associated with GMOs has the public demanding transparency on par with regulations throughout the rest of the developed world.

In 2011, the USDA approved the deregulation of genetically modified alfalfa, sugar beets, HoneySweet plums, Kentucky bluegrass, and the first-ever GMO animal intended for human consumption: Aqua Bounty's AquAdvantage salmon.

As GMOs become more prevalent in our food system, farmers are experiencing unprecedented issues including pesticide resistant 'superweeds' and insects, and soil quality issues. Scientists have discovered new pathogens found in livestock fed GMOs and declining butterfly populations have been linked to the glyphosate pesticide commonly known as Monsanto's Roundup, which has also been found in ground water, rain water and air samples.

This evening will feature a brief presentations and a panel with ::

David Bronner, CEO of Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps. Fresh off a 2 week 313-mile march from New York City to Washington DC, David will share stories from the Right2Know March and why we need to label GMOs now.

Pamm Larry is a grandmother from Chico, CA. On January 20 of this year, she had the idea that it was time for the people of California to vote on a ballot initiative to label genetically engineered foods and to remind people of the power we hold when we unite for change. She learned about the initiative process, developed a strategy and "came out" on March 10. Since that day, starting as one, she has been traveling around the state, meeting with folks and sparking local groups to educate their communities about GMOs and their chance to get them labeled. She is excited to now be part of an ever growing coalition that will get GMO Labeling on the ballot, then voted in YES in 2012.

Jeremy Seifert is a filmmaker and activist, traveling the country, and speaking on humanitarian and environmental issues with his award winning film "DIVE! Living Off America's Waste" and speaking about the interrelated issues of food waste, hunger, and the environment. Jeremy is passionate, charismatic, and exceedingly heartfelt. He has begun work on his next film project looking at genetically modified foods in the U.S. and around the world. When Jeremy isn’t working on a film project or speaking to the public, he spends his time gardening and raising urban chickens with his wife, Jennifer, and three children.

Jill Ettinger spent more than a decade working closely with some of the largest manufacturers in the natural products industry. She is now the news writer for Organic Authority, the leading online resource for organic food and lifestyle information. Her focus includes genetically modified foods, the vegan diet, natural plant and herb medicines, sustainability and world culture. Jill was published in the anthologies "Toward 2012: Perspectives on the Next Age" and "What Do You Believe?" She is co-director of Evolver Los Angeles, hosting an array of events to help foster creative community and urban transformation.

Jodi Wille is a book editor, filmmaker, and event producer. She is the co-publisher and editor of Process Media. She has produced multi-media events related to her books and topics of sustainability, subcultures, and spirituality in Los Angeles, New York, Brooklyn, San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, and London.

Process Media recently published THE MODERN UTOPIAN, Alternative Communities of the '60s and '70s, a definitive exploration of alternative communities from the ‘60s and ‘70s. Jodi is currently directing a feature documentary on the fabled Los Angeles spiritual commune The Source Family.

Hollis Doherty is a writer, actress, and currency activist. A lifelong passion for protecting the Earth's natural resources led her to a Biology degree at the University of Colorado. When she recently discovered the true story of the currency experiment in Woergl, Austria, which happened during the Great Depression, she flew there to research and ultimately write a screenplay, "The Miracle in Woergl", currently in pre-production. She believes that our sustainability problems are a systemic result of a faulty monetary mechanism, and that reorganizing the tools of human exchange will ultimately provide the solutions we need from a causal, and not result oriented basis.

Micki Krimmel is the founder and CEO of NeighborGoods.net where neighbors save money and resources by sharing goods and skills in a safe community.

An introductory session to Gnawa Trance & Dance
with Moroccan Healer Lyna Monfray

Ecstatic communing through dance can reveal hidden thresholds though which we may gain passage to visionary experiences ancient and timeless. Through intention setting and radical trust of our bodies' innate wisdom, we can connect to an inner fire or energy that is vital and purifying. Being initiated into dance as a healing and spirituality modality is gracefully transformative.

Lyna, a noted Moroccan healer deeply practiced in leading ecstatic dance rituals, will present a rare introductory session about this Sufi dance form to those unable to frequently travel to Morocco in order to work with her. Lyna Monfray is directly descended from the Gnawa Brotherhood, she was introduced to the rhythms and rituals of these masters of sound as a very young girl. From regions south of the Sahara, the Gnawas represent, one of the Sufi brotherhoods, a branch of healer musicians. They use musical rhythms to awaken and gradually raise the vibratory level of our senses and bodies.

The Yawanawa Project presents an innovative approach to preserve an indigenous culture and the Amazonian rain forests it depends on. This shared appreciation allows participants with very different backgrounds, indigenous or urban and from various countries, to find common ground in working together towards the preservation of this heritage. We have the hope that this expertise can be monetized and form a revenue stream for the Yawanawa in a way that will allow the tribe to continue a lifestyle that sustains their environment. In part we arrived at this approach by studying various alternative models of aid that have been tried before but that failed. An important aspect of this project will be to entice at least a few members of the tribe's younger generation to devote themselves to learn the "profession" of a shaman because otherwise the tribe will lose this living tradition that has survived millennia.

The presentations will address the various aspects of the project, talk about the Yawanawa tribe and their homeland, the most important medicinal and sacramental plants, make the case why this knowledge is worth preserving, how it has the potential to revolutionize our understanding of the working of the human mind and report on the progress the project has made so far.

Paulo Roberto Silva e Souza received his degree in psychology from the University Gama Filho in Rio de Janeiro and began his professional carrier as a psychologist at the Pinel Hospital Suicide Prevention Center and the Ana Freud Clinic and Health Center Saint Romain in Rio de Janeiro. In 1976 he had first experiences with Santo Daime in Amazonia and was initiated by Padrinho Sebastiao. In 1982 he founded the first Santo Daime church outside of the Amazon in Rio de Janeiro which he still leads today. In 1985 he organized and led a multidisciplinary commission for the Brazilian government that conducted scientific research on the use of sacramental plants in the Acre and Amazonas states which led to the legalization of the church of Santo Daime in Brazil. As psychotherapist and shaman he introduced Daime ceremonies to 14 countries.
In 1989 Paulo worked with IBAMA, the Brazilian Environmental Protection Agency, to preserve 1.6 million acres of national forests in the state of Amazonas, now the National Forests Mapiá, Inauini, and Purus. In conjunction with the UNEP-United Nations Environmental Program he implemented projects of environmental protection, forest extension and development for the Amazon. In 1994 he created the first National Heritage Private Reservation in Rio de Janeiro. He was a guest lecturer at Harvard University on environmental problems and solutions in Amazonia. Since 2008 he has been working on the project Eco Park Topo da Mata in the Natural Heritage Private Reservation.

Hartmut Neven studied Physics and Economics in Köln, Paris, Tübingen, Aachen, Jerusalem and Brazil. He wrote his Master thesis on a neuronal model of object recognition at the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics. In 1996 he received his Ph.D. from the Institute for Neuroinformatics at the Ruhr University in Bochum, Germany, for a thesis on "Dynamics for vision-guided autonomous mobile robots". Dr. Neven was assistant professor of computer science at the University of Southern California at the Laboratory for Biological and Computational Vision. Later he returned as the head of the Laboratory for Human-Machine Interfaces at USC’s Information Sciences Institute. Neven co-founded two companies, Eyematic for which he served as CTO and Neven Vision which he initially led as CEO. Today he is director of engineering at Google where he manages a team responsible for advancing Google’s visual search technologies. Teams led by Neven have repeatedly won top scores in government sponsored tests designed to determine the most accurate face recognition software. In collaboration with D-Wave he developed the first image recognition system based on quantum algorithms which was demonstrated at SuperComputing07.

Agnes Baker-Pilgrim is the oldest living member of her tribe, the Takelma Indians, originally from Southern Oregon. Agnes is a world renowned spiritual leader, member of the Historic Society and keeper of the Sacred Salmon Ceremony.

Margaret Behan, Arapahoe-Cheyenne, fourth generation of the Sand Creek Massacre. Margaret is a Cheyenne traditional dancer. She has served as a dance leader in Oklahoma and in powwows across the U.S. She is a sculptress for 30 years, she creates clay figurines that have won her many honors.

Vessels of Healing - The Practice of the Earth Treasure Vase

Learn a practice of sacred activism transmitted by a 106 year old Tibetan lama living in a cave in Nepal when he was asked, "What can we do to bring healing and protection to the Earth?"

A talk introducing this practice will be given by Dharmacharya, Cynthia Jurs who will also lead a guided meditation followed by a ceremony that invites participants to share their prayers into earth treasure vases dedicated to South Africa and Australia. This powerful evening will open new dharma doors and inspire us to engage our practice in caring for the Earth and all beings.

Cynthia Jurs, a Dharmacharya of engaged buddhism in the Order of Interbeing of Thich Nhat Hanh, received this practice in 1990 from HE Kushok Mangden, Charok Rinpoche, and founded the Earth Treasure Vase Global Healing Project in order to invite groups and individuals to turn their prayers into action. Consecrated clay vessels known as earth treasure vases are filled with symbolic offerings and prayers and taken on pilgrimages all around the world to be buried in the Earth with the intention of bringing healing and protection to the planet. Over the last 20 years, 23 locations have been visited and in partnership with indigenous elders and young activists, amazing projects have developed. With just 7 vessels left, 2 group pilgrimages are being offered this May - to South Africa and Australia. The evening includes a screening of several short films about recent pilgrimages.

A PATH TO OPENING YOUR WISDOM HEART
Rare Qi Gong Initiation and Meditation Instruction

Jeffery Beach will be visiting Los Angeles to initiate us in a rare form of Qigong known by few Westerners. We will receive a transmission of the lineage begun by Lü Dong Bin, considered one of the eight immortals of Taoism, also a Buddhist Dharma guardian and a manifestation of Manjushri, the Bodhisattva of wisdom.

Jeffery practices and has taught a rare esoteric form of Taoist-Buddhist meditational Qigong, Wuji Xian Tian (recouping primordial energy from before birth), in which he became the first Western initiate in 1986. He has practiced Yi Chuan and Xing Yi Chuan since 1974, two internal forms of Chinese Martial Arts. He became a tantric practitioner of Tibetan (Vajrayana) Buddhism in 1994.

He recently returned from Dehra Dun, India where he lived in 2009-2010. While there he was a resident at the Songtsen Library of the Drikung Kagyu lineage. His Holiness, Drikung Kyabgön Chetsang Rinpoche, the lineage holder, was so pleased with Jeffery’s meditation skills he requested that Jeff teach these techniques to young monks of the Kagyü College. Jeffery had been living in China and India almost four years by then. Once he completed the course with the young Tibetan monks, Jeffery returned to San Francisco where he now resides.

Jeffery says this about this Qigong practice, quoting the American mystic, Joel Goldsmith, “If you don’t empty yourself you can’t know the grace of God,” A seemingly incongruous quote from a 40 year Buddhist practitioner. No surprise coming from Jeffery who says that his most pro-found wish is to bring the universal principles of these spiritual teachings to all by writing and teaching with the every day words that can be applied to our daily lives, whether or not we have a spiritual practice or belief.

Jeffery has devoted his life to Buddhism for more than 40 years. He’s studied Buddhist sutras and meditation practices for 3 decades, from Chinese and Japanese Zen to Vajrayana Buddhist philosophy. He will talk about Shakti and Qi energy, how to develop it through this practice and he will teach us the same meditation techniques taught to the young Drikung Kagyu monks at the monastery in Dehra Dun, India earlier in 2010. About the Project "I Am Walking"

Christopher Howe had a vision to walk from Los Angeles to Brazil, carrying and meditating with peoples prayers.

In Oct. 2008 he embarked upon that journey. Since then he’s been collecting prayers from people he randomly meets along the way, meditating and praying with them, as if they were his own.

He then exchanges the prayer with the next person he meets who wants to write a new prayer. Now, two years later he is in Peru nearing the completion of his amazing walk to Brazil that has also been about an inner journey, where Love is central.

He is currently writing a book on the project that will also explore the art of prayer, pilgrimage, adventure travel, politics, immigration, the metaphor of roads and goals in personal, political, environmental development and destruction, mysticism, love and healing.

Project Butterfly invites you to join Chiwan Choi and Mike the Poet for a much anticipated writing workshop with two LA contemporary literary heroes.

It is easy to forget in its vastness, but our landscape is made up of the smallest details. When we were young, we watched an old film, Powers of Ten where the camera zooms out by the power of ten each time until we are in outer space and our world is nothing but a barely visible speck.

In Writing the Map, we will tackle the written form, both structured and free, poetry and prose, and we will make them heard, through loud chants and intense whispers, to collect the stories and details of our lives until they build our individual landscapes, our personal topographies , so we understand and share the world we have lived through our words and our voices.

We will reverse that camera that has zoomed out for so long and get back into ourselves, into our personal details and stories that have been buried for too long.

This workshop will be filled with many writing exercises and lessons.

Come prepared to write, read aloud and create.

Chiwan Choi is a writer, editor, teacher, and publisher. He has been a member of the Los Angeles Poets & Writers Collective since 1989. His poems and essays have appeared in numerous journals and magazines, including ONTHEBUS, Esquire , and circa. Chiwan’s first major collection of poetry, The Flood, was published by Tía Chucha Press in April, 2010.

He is a regular in the Los Angeles literary circuit, often invited as a featured poet at readings at The Hotel Cafe in Hollywood and the legendary Beyond Baroque in Venice. He also leads two writing workshops, one in downtown and one in Santa Monica.

After a two-year stint in New York, where he received an MFA in Dramatic Writing from the Tisch School at NYU, Chiwan returned to Los Angeles where he and his wife, Judeth Oden, launched a new publishing company to feature Los Angeles writers, Writ Large Press , in March of 2008.

Mike Sonksen, also known as Mike the Poet, has long been an integral force in the Los Angeles poetry scene. He has been widely acclaimed for his live performances, contributions to international publications and legendary city tours. Poet, journalist, historian, tour guide, and teacher, he is regularly published in the LA Citybeat, OC Weekly, New Angeles, LA Weekly, and many others. This 3rd generation L.A. native graduated from UCLA in 1997. His book, I Am Alive in Los Angeles, has been added to the curriculum of several universities and has received rave reviews.

Lama Norbu

He recently authored Love Sutra Lama to highlight feminine spiritual awakening and its importance for our times. Both Santoyo and Lakeman are considered luminaries/visionary pioneers in the field of Permaculture, both have inspired and educated thousands and both are dynamic and knowledgeable presenters.

Permaculture is a world-wide movement founded by Bill Mollison & David Holmgren. Permaculture looks to Nature to recreate and mimic systems where each element contributes to the success of the whole. Commonalities in all ecosystems reflect guidelines for designers to use.

The philosophy of Permaculture is to reduce the impact that human settlements have on non-renewable and renewable resources, while creating an abundant living environment, catering to the needs of all living creatures.

Permaculture is a science developed through the observation and analysis of natural systems. Through this analysis set structural patterns common to all natural systems emerge. Mark Lakeman is the founder of the design-build activist organization The City Repair Project, and also Communitecture, Inc., the award-winning architecture and planning collaborative, both based in Portland, Oregon. In the 25 years of Mark's creative engagement in urban design, public and fine art, architecture, and planning, his work has been inspiring and transformative for communities across the continent. His projects include national prototypes at many scales, and his awards and distinctions include the Lewis Mumford Award for Socially Responsible Design (ADPSR), support from The National Endowment For the Arts, and numerous AIA and regional design awards.

The Siberian tradition of Shamanism is 40,000 years old. Its development is considered the source of many Shamanic traditions, including Yoga and Tibetan Healing Lineages.

In this class we will touch the deepest wisdom of how to develop the body of dreams according to ancient Siberia Shamans. We will talk about this millennium wisdom and more importantly - Experience It.

Master Perun from the age of 4 years, demonstrated special abilities of healing and clairvoyance. He was an "Indigo" child. He had difficulties in developing his qualities in the former Soviet Union until he found his Teacher, Alid Faski Natva, who is known by as a legendary healer and is a Raja Yogi in the authentic tradition.

Master Perun has been traveling all over the world for 12 years. He helps build schools in Europe, North and South America, Russia, India, Australia to help support the 300,000 existing students. He practices Siberian Shamanism, Tibetan Healing, Raja Yoga, and is a Tantra Master. Using the methods of his teacher, he has achieved remarkable results in the healing of diseases like cancer, diabetes, depression, sexual disorders and so on. He holds a Masters Degree in Sociology and has researched ancient cultures to bring their wisdom to the modern era in order to improve the quality of life for all.

Fall Equinox Gender Council and Shamanic Acupuncture

In honor of the Fall Equinox and toward a better understanding of relationships between the masculine and the feminine - Project Butterfly, Eric Baumgartner of Urban Remedy and Andrea Brown of The Ojai Foundation will be hosting a Shamanic Acupuncture Dream Journey and Gender Council.

As we approach the change of seasons, the moment when the dark and light, the masculine and the feminine, are in perfect balance, we are blessed with a moment to reflect, to align, to deepen, and to come into right relationship.

The gathering will begin by diving into our own hearts, by way of a Shamanic Acupuncture Dream Journey led by Eric B., to get to the core of what it is we are here to speak, to share, to shine, to hold.

From this place we will then step into a Gender Council facilitated by Eric Baumgartner and Andrea Brown. This Council is dedicated to the ongoing dance of the masculine and feminine energies in our lives.

The four intentions of Council are ::

Eric Baumgartner L.Ac. is a Master of Acupuncture and East/West Herbalism , and a Medicine Man trained extensively in the healing traditions of the Americas, Aztec, Cherokee, Toltec, Maya, Inka... He is a global authority in plant medicines and helped design the First Full Spectrum Green Farmacy in Venice. Juan Ruiz Naupari is a contemporary shaman from an Inka lineage of high priests in Peru. His grandfather was known as Paqo Runa, a word that means "Holy Man," and passed his lineage to Juan. A Psychologist and Music Therapist, he has researched Eastern and Western wisdom especially the values of consciousness through different mystical and shamanic techniques. Juan is the founder and Director of Inkarri Multicultural Association, an international organization dedicated to the transmission of spiritual development. He integrates thirty years of global work with a counsel of Celestial Masters known as The Golden Eagle. The Masters guide every detail in a "system for the awakening of humanity," known as the Pneuma System. These teachings include Pneuma Breathwork, a transpersonal experience of our inner divinity. Our onsite sleeping facilities are rustic and simple, in the style of a private camp in a semi-wilderness setting with hot showers and restrooms. Accommodations include private and shared yurts and domes as well as campsites for tents.

Animal Tracking Class with Jim Lowery

Tracking is an ancient skill that has been called a person’s “first communication with the earth.” Identifying tracks, reading them for an animal’s mood and behavior, and following them to understand the web of life in a natural area, are skills we modern people can use to connect to the land. Tracking is also an invaluable tool to understand, appreciate, and protect open space around us.

Jim Lowery of Earth Skills [www.earthskills.com] has taught tracking to thousands of students from middle school students to field biologists for 23 years and will give you a solid introduction to the art with lots of practice in this seven-hour class. This event marks the beginning of a series of 7 class/workshops comprising Yoga Sadhaka Training, to be held once a month throughout Los Angeles culminating in June of 2009.

Sadhaka is a Tantric term for "practitioner." The aim of this course is to train individuals in becoming practitioners of the Yogic path, in order to access the depth of wisdom and transformation possible beyond the enjoyment of physical postures and brief periods of meditation. The first half of each class will focus on yogic philosophy, subtle physiology, and elements of various forms of practice. The second half will take the form of a physical Yoga practice, integrating the principles learned and ending in meditation. Each workshop will be linked with one of the chakras, beginning with the Root center in December and completing with the Crown center in June. Students may take as many classes as they like, pre-register or drop in (*space is limited, pre-registration is encouraged). There is no experience necessary. This course will deeply enrich the knowledge & practice of any Yoga Teacher, and will give new students a strong foundation in the Yogic methods who have no background in study or practice. Physical practice will be for all levels!

Starhawk is one of the most respected voices in modern earth-based spirituality. She is also well-known as a global justice activist and organizer, whose work and writings have inspired many to action. Starhawk is perhaps best known as an articulate pioneer in the revival of the Goddess religion.

She is a veteran of progressive movements, from anti-war to anti-nukes, and is deeply committed to bringing the techniques and creative power of spirituality to political activism. She is internationally known as a trainer in nonviolence and direct action, and an activist within the peace movement, women's movement, environmental movement, and anti-globalization movement.

Starhawk is the author or coauthor of eleven books, including the classics The Spiral Dance and The Fifth Sacred Thing. Her latest is her first book for children: The Last Wild Witch.
